Avenged Sevenfold 'Carry On' into 2013 and Beyond!!

Zacky Vengeance, Johnny Christ, M. Shadows, Arin Ilejay, and Synyster Gates

"I felt that the term "Carry On" was perfect not only for the [Call of Duty] characters but for Avenged Sevenfold moving forward.
I stuck with that."

-M. Shadows-

Artistdirect.com Interview 11-14-12

“We started putting ourselves in that position, and what we’d want if one of us passed away. There’s no way we’d want the band to break up because of us. We talked to his [Jimmy's] parents and his family ... and they said you’ve got to keep going, you’ve got to carry on.
There’s no other choice.
So, we picked up our shit and carried on.”

I hope people are going to dig it."

Facts from the 'Hail to the King' Era

2013

This awesome piece of artwork was created by Cam Rackam who is a close friend of Avenged Sevenfold. Unfortunately, there was a mix up and it was originally believed to be the albums cover. Below Johnny Christ explains what happened and why the album cover was changed so abruptly:

“One of our best friends, who we’ve worked with in the past, came up with these two really great pieces of art,” explains Johnny Christ. “His style’s really unique to him and he came up with the concept that we all really, really loved. We were busy mixing and focusing on the album in New York at the time and the label were sending us deadlines so we just sent out a piece of art that he had done that we liked." They are the covers below. (continued below photo's)

On the left is Cam Rackams original concept drawing.                    On the right Cam's painting of the 'Hail to the King'.

“We never really said it was the album cover,” Johnny continues. “But it was left to interpretation and it probably wasn’t the wisest thing for us to do because it confused a lot of people. Once the album was finished, we decided that, that album cover didn’t go along with the atmosphere of the songs and the other album cover we wanted to use didn’t have the right vibe – this album is bare bones. It’s the core of Avenged Sevenfold. We didn’t even put our name on the cover. We just put the Deathbat and ‘Hail To The King’ because we wanted to make a statement.”

*Loudwire and MTV Hive both listed Avenged Sevenfold at #3 on their lists of 2013's most anticipated albums.
January 14, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold's single 'Carry On'  reached the  #4 spot on active rock radio.

Avenged Sevenfold began their writing process for 'Hail to the King' in September 2012 according to Johnny Christ and it took seven weeks to record the album, according to M. Shadows.

Kerrang! Interview with M. Shadows July 10, 2013

On July 10, 2013, the LaCrosse, Wisconsin show was cancelled due to venue issues.
The above mentioned Kerrang! interview confirmed that Mike Elizondo was  chosen to be the producer for the "Hail to the King" album. This is Mike's second album to produce for Avenged Sevenfold, his first being "Nightmare".
'Hail to the king' was recorded at Cam Am Studio's in Tarzana, California and according to Zacky Vengeance it took approximately three months to record the album from start to finish.
'Hail to the King' was mastered in New York City by Andy Wallace who has been the bands mainstay for mastering pretty much all of their albums over the years.
M.Shadows said on a radio interview with 93X that 'Hail to the KIng' was mastered twice and was not compressed so it will pop on the radio.
M.Shadows said in a radio interview with 92.9/106.9 that 'Hail to the King' was the first album completely played live in the studio and that since there is only one main riff in the songs instead of many guitar parts playing all at one time, the songs on the album will be easier for them to learn to play.

Summer Festivals Tour in the US

On July 17, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold kicked off their first few tour dates since the band went home in 2012 to rest, recoup, and to eventually begin  working on creating their next album. The band really needed time to recover from the previous touring cycle for their #1 album 'Nightmare' and M.Shadows has said in previous interviews that if they tried to write a new album right away after touring 'Nightmare' it wouldn't have been up to their standards. While 'Nightmare' was definitely well recieved and the shows were almost always sold out, the emotional toll with dealing with the loss of their drummer and best friend, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, left them needing to recharge their batteries and just relax a while and maybe try to  live the normal life, well as normal as it get's for these guys that is, for a while. The band's new album will be released, August 27, 2013 but in the meantime the band will get back into the swing of things by doing a handful of summer festivals before  and just after the release of the album. The first actual tour that is directly related to "Hail to the King" will be in the US and run through October.

As an extra special addition to the Metal Hammer magazines cover story on Avenged Sevenfold, July 2013 they have been slowly releasing video interviews with the band on their Youtube channel. The first installment was released on July 24, 2013 and the second on July 29, 2013. The topics discussed are directly related to the making of the new album 'Hail to the King' and their thoughts and feelings surrounding it all.
Avenged Sevenfold posted the following on their Twitter account which was linked to their Youtube account on July 29, 2013:

This banner was flown over Huntington Beach, California, the bands home town in front of the crowd watching the US World Surfing open. The banner  was used to promote the bands new album, 'Hail to the kings' upcoming release date.

On July 30, 2013 Johnny of Johnny's Saloon made mention on his personal Instagram Account that Avenged Sevenfold had contributed to rebuilding and cleaning up the mess the rioters made during the US World Surfing Open which was held and occured in Huntington Beach, CA, the bands home town.
On July 30, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold released the single 'Hail to the king' CD edition. Also included with the single is a never before released  live version of 'Nightmare'. The single was made available at Best Buy and private music retailers.

In the Revolver Spanish Edition, the magazine did a little review of the album with some lengthy descriptions of the songs as they heard them. Our own Rena helped to translate it into English and shared the scan with us as well.
The translation of the article is exerpt as follows:

{A curtain of rain opens "Shepherd of Fire", constructed on a mysterious guitar riff which collides after a minute into a theme which is half-way between "Trust" of Megadeth, Disturbed and the typical classical halo of M. Shadows' band.
"Hail to the King" sounds very classical, a cut very like Dio, very heavy, the first single of the album. Also very demolishing sounds "Doin' Time", a convincing theme which reminds of the cockiest Guns'N'Roses or what Slash did in his last era. In fact, the guitar work of the whole album is outstanding. Tabs full of attitude, insolence, feeling go into each other using every gap, as small as it may be, to stand out.
With a clear influence of the most classical Heavy Metal, begins "This Means War", until it turns into a theme which reminds of Metalica's "Sad But True". This takes away a lot of originality of a theme that changes in the pre chorus to convert itself into a more dense theme.
A choir of sacred music opens "Requiem", one of the most King Diamond cuts of the album.
If "This Means War", reminds of Metalica, the guitars of the beginning of "Crimson Day" remind of those of Guns'N'Roses "Don't Cry" in production, until it turns in a half tempo where Shadows' melancolical voice carries the notes after it.
Another great song of the album is "Heretic". It also sounds like Megadeath, more so because of the rhythmic base and the guitar arrangements. What happens is, that as the song progresses it gains coherency. The dueling guitar solos at the end of the song are simply spectacular.
With a sharp bass starts "Coming Home", in pure Iron Maiden style."Fear Of The Dark" jumps directly into the musical memory of all Heavy Metal loversand Maiden are made referent as the song progresses. Obviously the production changes (outstanding throughout all album), M. Shadows voice and especially those melody-laden choruses which are purely A7X. "Planets" opens quite baleful with a minimalistic, but pounding, riff, being one of the most softest songs on the album. The album closes with "Acid Rain", opening with piano and some string arrangements that will put us into the sad atmosphere of a song that ends according with the beginning of the album, with falling rain.}

It’s just another thing that we have been working on while we were writing. We’re into video games obviously, so we’ve always liked to release something like that. We’re getting closer and closer. It’s been a work in progress. The animated series is something fun, kind of a joke. It’s not a full on joke but it’s something cool for the fans. It’s something different that we can give to the fans that is directly related to the album. We wrote a more serious record and I think that these things are something to give to the fans to show a different side on what we’ve been working on while we’ve been away for a couple of years.' Thanks Ellie!

Johnny Christ did an interview with AMH Network in mid-August. During that interview he was asked about the writing process for 'Hail to the King' and in my personal opinion he seemed to explain it all the best out of all the guys so far. Below is his answer.

'We went in and figured out what we wanted to do and where we were trying to go right from the very beginning. We’re always trying to do something better than the last record; to do something different and evolve as a band. We really wanted to make an eclectic hard rock record that slams sonically. It’s kind of like bare bones – with a guitar, a vocal and some drums all up in your face. Huge. We really studied some of the bands that had done it before, their ways and what it takes to sound sonically huge. Listening to stuff like Led Zeppelin and ACDC, we were just listening to see just how they achieve that. We noticed that a lot of it was the space. You really have to play with the space in a riff so it can be allowed to breathe. We wanted everyone that when listening to this record to almost zombie-like headbang through it. For us, it was something that we knew was going to take a little maturity. Any time that we wanted to put a whole layer of stuff on top of a riff that we worked on, it was gone. If a riff couldn’t stand alone, it wasn’t allowed to be on the song. Every riff had to be perfect and heavy, collectively what we wanted it to be. If there was one person in the room who went ‘Heh, I don’t think it is there yet guys,’ we’d scrap the whole song. I think that took a little bit of song writing maturity for us. That made it take a little bit longer. We took it song by song. We weren’t writing four or five songs at once and jumping around. We focused in on each song until it was done and then we’d go onto another one. It took a little effort and it took a little longer, probably six to nine months for just the writing process before we even recorded it.' Johnny Christ AMH Network Interview

The stream is high quality and you can listen to the whole album as many times as you'd like. So plug in your best set of headphones and turn it up to 10. Head over there now to listen and pre order.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. See you all on the road!

A few hours after the album was opened up on itunes to the folks in the states Zacky Vengeance posted the following on his Twitter account:

"@Vengenz1: I'm glad to see people like the album and to the people who don't like it..I'm glad to know someday you will like the album"

August 21, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold did a short promo run in the Southern California Area

Jason Ellis of the Jason Ellis show posted this picture on his Instagram

Nikki Sixx of Sixxsense posted this pic on his Twitter account.
He also posted the following Tweets about the visit.

"Great fucking hang with today."
We have coming in the studio.I left their new unreleased cd in my car with the top down. Please don't steal it.

Below is that interview.

On August 21, 2013, Kerrang! posted a video interview of Avenged Sevenfold on thier site that only those indivduals in the UK could see. Avenged Sevenfold later released the video themselves to the world.
On August 21, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold and itunes announced a Twitter chat with Avenged Sevenfold. Fans were instructed to post questions on Twitter to the band using #AskA7X.

As of August 21, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold's "Hail to the King" had reached the #3 spot on the rock album chart on itunes.

On August 22, 2013, tickets for the free show to be held on the 26th of August at the Palladium in LA started being distributed at Johnny's Bar and at the Slidebar. Unfortunately many fans especially those at the Slidebar were less than happy by the way it was handled siting fans leaving with more than one ticket per person and some people getting into line before the time they were instructed to do so but the turnout was very impressive as the pictures show below.

At Johnny's Saloon every person who showed up for the free tickets also signed the Deathbat banner.

On August 24, 2013, A7X Italia started releasing interview snippets the band did while they were in Italy. You can find them on A7X Italia's Youtube account.

On August 24, 2013, the remainder of tickets  for the free show to be performed on August 26th at the Palladium were distributed and by all accounts things went smoothly.

Thanks to Geoffrey for taking these pictures for me of the lines of fans waiting to get their tickets while he waited to get his own.

Even Mateo from "Live in the LBC" was waiting to get his free ticket to the show.

On August 24, 2013, M. Shadows sent a message via the bands web site in relation to the band releasing more tickets to their OC free show.

It is as follows:

We understand that a lot of people got turned away yesterday for tickets to our free Palladium show. Since we are from Orange County we felt terrible that we only had around 600 tickets on hand. Well the good news is we saved about 800 more for you and will be giving them out at The Slidebar in Fullerton until they are gone. No lines, no hassle. Just walk in and ask for the tickets and they are yours.
Tickets are there now. Sorry for the confusion and we hope to see as many of you as we can at The Hollywood Palladium on Monday for the CD release show.
-M. Shadows-

The band posted the following video on August 24, 2013 which shows how insane the response was to the free ticket give away.

On August 23, 2013, M. Shadows did a short Q and A type Twitter chat. The questions were asked by the fans but were conveyed by itunes.

Below are the Questions with M. Shadows answers.
Thanks to Ashley for compiling it all.

M. Shadows appeared on the final episode of Rock of Jerricho on August 24, 2013.
On August 24, 2013 it was announced that Avenged Sevenfold would do a live chat at WBR and the fans could attend with an RSVP or it can be live streamed at Avengedsevenfold.com. The remainder of information is included on the banner below.

Before the Free show Zacky Vengeance posted this picture on his Instagram account with the message below

The day before the free show Zacky V. posted on his Twtter account that he would be going around the area handing out tickets personally.
Below are his Tweets referencing his venture.

"Like the good old days of driving around OC handing out free tickets in hopes people would see the show, only now people actually want them."

"I'm gonna be driving around OC all day with a stack of tickets too so if I see any A7X fans out and about I will hook you up as well!"

As is customary with all of Avenged Sevenfold albums, the band kicked off the albums release with a concert in the OC, their home town area of California. By all accounts the show was insane and very energetic.

The set list for the night included a total of five new songs off of 'Hail to the King'.

Critical Acclaim
Welcome to the Family
Hail to the King
Doing Time
Buried Alive
Fiction
Nightmare
This Means War

Hot Topic posted pics on their Instagram all night from the show.
Two of the pics they posted were a before the show started pic then later posted another once the show began and the fans were in the house.

As I understand it, the band's families including thier parents where in attendance of the show. Also, many tweets and posts were made from the bands friend in the business who also shared that they were in attendance too.

On August 27, 2013 'Hail to the King' was released with a very promising future. It only took a short time before the album climbed and then dominated the itunes charts not only in the US but in other countries around the world.

Zacky V. posted the following tongue in cheek Tweet later the day of the album's release.

"I'm glad to see people like the album and to the people who don't like it..I'm glad to know someday you will like the album."

On August 27, 2013, Warner Brothers Records also announced that the title track from "Hail to the King" by the same name had returned to the top spot on active rock radio.

On August 27, 2013 the band did a Q and A at Warner Brothers Records with Nicole Alverez of KROQ as the host of the event.
Fans as far away as Japan and Australia flew in to attend the event. The band answered questions which included things about the album as well as some always interesting never disappointing questions about them as individuals. The event was very enjoyable as we could see for the first time since prior to Nightmare the guys in their true element which is always crazy and interesting. This event also allowed much of the guys true personalities to shine through giving newer fans a chance to get to know them more as individuals.

Unfortunately the video of the event is no longer available.

Later that evening M. Shadows and Johnny Chirst went to Kroq and  cohosted the Furious 5 @ 9 with Nicole Alverez. The guys had been partying earlier and they joked that their speach was still slurred. They were also heading to a strip club later that night after they left there. Unfortunately that interview has been removed from youtube

Beginning on August 27, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold began releasing video commentary with the band that explains a little bit about each track on the 'Hail to the King' Album. You can find these commentary video's on the Avenged Sevenfold Channel on Youtube.

On August 31, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold released a video of fans in line while they were waiting to enter the free show, titled 'Free Palladium Album Release Party'. The video displayed the fans excitement over being blessed enough to live in the OC so they could see the band live for free, displayed a large amount of first time concert goers, and a few who proclaimed their eternal love and devotion for the band. 'Hail to the King' #1 Album First Week of Release

Early on September 1, 2013 it was revealed that 'Hail to the KIng' would only make the #2 spot in Australia however it is the highest ranking for any Avenged Sevenfold album to date in that country.

YES! AVENGED SEVENFOLD 'Hail to the King' has landed at #2 ON the ARIA charts! This represents the band's best debut in Australia! Tweeted by The Sound wave Festival

On September 1, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold would achieve something that not even the much loved, respected and adored "Nightmare" album could do with the 'Hail to the King' album and that was to be top of the UK Charts for the first time!

A Message from Zacky V. about the #1 album ranking in the UK.

It has been a hell of a ride thus far and having our first number 1 album in the UK is a monumental achievement for our fans and us.
I remember playing the 100 Club to prove to our fans we were willing to start from the ground up again to earn your respect.
Thank you for putting heavy metal back on the throne. We look forward to growing old with you.

- Zacky V

Metal Hammer wrote this on their Twitter account about the #1 ranking in the UK.

Amazing scenes as Avenged Sevenfold‘s Hail To The King has been officially confirmed as this week’s Number 1 in the UK album charts, despite some stiff competition.

On September 4, 2013, it was revealed through several different musical sources that 'Hail to the King' had taken the top spot on album charts all around the world.

The following countries would hold the #1 spot in album sales for the first week's release of 'Hail to the King'.
US, UK, Canada, Brazil, Ireland and Mexico.

It would be later that afternoon before there would be any acknowledgement from the band in relation to the huge news.

The following was the acknowledgement made by the band on their Twitter Account to the United States.
"We're honored that our fans have once again put Heavy Metal at its rightful spot of #1. Celebrate today because this victory belongs to you."
This would be the bands second #1 in the United States, the first being with 2010's 'Nightmare'.

The following was the acknowledgement made by the band on their Twitter Account to Brazil.
"Obrigado to our Brazilian fans who made "Hail to the King" the #1 album in all of Brazili! See you at @rockinrio"

The following was the acknowledgement made by the band on their Twitter Account to Canada:
"Canada returned metal to its rightful throne by making "Hail to the King" the #1 album also this week. Let the celebration begin!"

The following was the acknowledgement made by the band on their Twitter Account to Mexico.
"Muchas gracias to our fans in Mexico who made "Hail to the King" the #1 album en Mexico!"

The following was the acknowledgement by the band on their Twitter Account to Ireland.
"Ireland also helped return metal to its rightful throne by making "Hail to the King" #1. Raise a Guinness and let the celebration begin!"

Zacky Vengeance Tweeted the following from his personal Twitter account about 'Hail to the King's' #1 positions.
"Thank you for making Hail to the King #1 all around the world. And don't forget to party tonight like its 6661!!!"

On September 4, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold spent the day with some special fans.

The single, "Hail to the King' has been #1 on Loudwire radio for 3 consecutive weeks beginning August 13, 2013.
On September 7, 2013, Jim Dunlop Guitar products revealed on their Facebook the pick designs Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, and Johnny Christ would be using for the 'Hail to the king'/2013 touring cycle.

Synyster Gates picks (Top left), Johnny Christ picks (Top Right), and Zacky Vengeance picks (Bottom)

On September 17, 2013, Metal Core Tweeted that Avenged Sevenfold were working on a video for 'Shepherd of Fire' and that the video is being directed by Wayne Isham who has also directed several other Avenged Sevenfold videos over the years, most recently he directed the much beloved 'So Far Away' video from 2010's 'Nightmare' album.
According to M. Shadows who was interviewed by The Bear in Edmonton, Canada just prior to the bands show at Rock in Rio, it will be sometime before the band releases the video for 'Shepherd of Fire' which will also be the bands next single released. The reason why the band went ahead and made it was because of scheduling issues and having time to do a video since the band will be on tour most of the remainder of the year. He said if it's done then it will be ready when it's time for it's release.
He describes the 'Shepherd of Fire' video as a sort of  Oliver Stones, 'Natural Born killers' meets Pink Floyd's,'The Wall'.

Rock in Rio

Rock in Rio 2013 was an amazing sight to behold with the audience numbering at just shy of 150,000 in attendance. Thanks to the live streaming of the event from Youtube.com and Rock in Rio the cyber audience were included from all around the world as well so that potentionally millions actually were able to view this awesome show.

Thanks to Danny, Avenged Sevenfold's head of security and personal assistant's post on his Intstagram account you can view just how large the crowd that attended the event actually was.

Below is a copy of the set list which was provided to me from David on Twitter:

Just after Avenged Sevenfold completed their set Twitter lit up like the preverbial Christmas Tree with trends related to their show.

If you are somewhere else in the world, stand by....we're coming your way soon

Additionally, the Copenhagan Denmark show was also sold out.

As of October 14, 2013, The single 'Hail to the King' continued to rule the top spot on active rock radio with an outstanding 9th consecutive week at #1, and it's 7th week at #1 on mainstream rock.

Participating iheart radio stations throughout the US opened a promotion which entailed a fly away to London's Wembley Arena to see A7X at their sold out show there in December with a meet and greet with the band after the show. Avenged Sevenfold Perform on the Red Bull Soundstage

On November 1, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold performed at the Red Bull Sound Stage which was streamed live on the KROQ web site. The event was MC'd by KROQ's own Stryker. Following the concert which lasted approximately 45 minutes, was a short Q & A with a couple audience members allowed to ask questions too. The venue was small, very small compared to where A7X now plays which are mostly in arena's. This venue only held a total of 200 people but those 200 made their presence known in a huge way, in a very loud way, in the A7X family way. The band really seemed to enjoy themselves doing this small venue and that's always an extra enjoyable show to watch.

Message posted on the bands Twitter account

The European leg of the 'Hail to the King' tour kicked off in Helsinki, Finland on November 6, 2013 with a huge sold out crowd of fans excitedly anticipating the bands performance and when it began they were handsomely rewarded for their attendance.

The set list went unaltered to what was performed at the US tour dates.

Set List:
               'Shepherd of Fire'
               'Critical Acclaim'
               'Welcome to the Family'
               'Hail to the King'
               'Doing Time'
               'Buried Alive'
               'Fiction'
               'Nightmare'
               'This Means War'
               'Afterlife'
              'Syn's Solo
              'Requiem'
              'Bat country'
 Encore:
              'Chapter Four'
              'Unholy Confessions'

All of the European tour dates followed the same set list with the exception of the November 20, 2013 Zenith Paris, France date in which the set list was shortened by two songs due to a minor vocal issue that M. Shadows was having.

And just like all of the United States tour dates the band continued to make the day of some deserving fans by giving free tickets to the show to whoever could figure out the location of the clue provided and get there first.
All dates won tickets to the first to find the location with the exception of Wembley Arena where the winners were added to the bands guest list as well.

On November 7, 2013, Avenged Sevenfold released their second music video, 'Shepherd of Fire'. The video was directed by Wayne Isham, who has done mulitlple video's for the band in the past and it was produced by Wondros.

And in the very kind and thoughtful way the band normally does things for their fans they released the video to their Indonesian fans first since when the band were to tour in that country in 2012 they couldn't because of multiple issues, the main one being the poor condition of the stage that they were to perform on. (See announcement below)

On the same day as the video was released Rolling Stone Magazine put this up on their video review page about 'Shepherd of Fire'.

Avenged Sevenfold Live in the Fast Lane in 'Shepherd of Fire'
Band drives through flames and plays guitar on the hood of a moving car

By KORY GROW NOVEMBER 7, 2013 6:30 PM
The members of Avenged Sevenfold kick back behind the wheel of a classic car in the video for "Shepherd of Fire," a track off this year's Hail to the King. The new clip revives the driving motif of their breakthrough "Bat Country" video in 2005 and, while that video played off imagery from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, this video looks just as hellish.

Directed by Wayne Isham (Britney Spears, Metallica), "Shepherd of Fire" juxtaposes images of flames, vultures and skulls amidst shots of frontman M. Shadows attempting to navigate his bandmates along a very windy road (whilst headbanging, no less). Guitarist Synyster Gates even manages to stay on the hood of the vehicle while he plays a fleet-fingered solo and takes a swig of beer.

As of November 12, 2013, for the eleventh straight week the 'Hail the the King' single has ruled the top spot on Mainstream rock radio.

As of November12. 2013, itunes had the "Hail to the King" Album listed under the Classic Metal Albums with the likes of AC/DC's 'Back in Black' and Led Zepplins 'Mothership'
Thanks to Tudy for sharing this.

As it turns out, according to Metal Hammer UK's December 2013 edition which features Avenged Sevenfold, "Hail to the King' is quite a stand out when it comes to their accomplishment of having a number one album simutaneously in both the United States and in the United Kingdom. It seems that only a small group of other bands have ever accomplished such a feat.
Those are as follows:
2013 Black Sabbath's 13
2008 Metallica's 'Death Magnetic'
2008 AC/DC  'Black Ice'
2000 Limp Bizkit 'Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water'

It is told that Zacky V. got a tad metal at Wembley arena, channeling the awesome days of onstage smashing guitar insanity.
This was the end result of said incident.
The guitar was given to a happy fan who was present at the show.

"Turns out there wasn't any candy in it after all.  Oh well"
Zacky's witty remark made via his Twitter Account following the aforementioned incident.

On Sunday, December 8, 2013, M.Shadows shared some information via the bands web site, avengedsevenfold.com related to the bands future touring plans and about the new video game the band have created for their fans.

An Update from M. Shadows

First we want to thank all of our friends that we just saw in Europe. Hands down the best tour that we have ever had over there. It was an honor to play for you all every night. As we promised, we are slowly filling in summer dates so we can come play for you again. We also have been getting quite a few requests for new countries that we haven't played yet. We will use this summer as an opportunity to come to few new places. Please stay tuned for that.

As for the rest of the world, we hear you, and we will be coming soon! By now you’ve already heard announcements about Download Festival, Graspop Metal Meeting, Nova Rock Festival and Aerodome, and there will be a lot more dates announced in the coming months. Right now though, we have decided to hang out at home until we get over to Australia for Soundwave Festival in February.

Since we have a couple months off we wanted to update you on a couple things that we promised a while back.

First is our "Hail to the King" animated series that we did with Machinima and Jon Schnepp. You may know Jon from his work on Metalocalypse on Adult Swim. It's funny stuff and it was an honor to work with him. Below is the trailer for the series which will debut Dec. 15th. We hope it gives you something entertaining to watch over your Holiday break. The series also plays as a backstory to our mobile game "Hail to the King: Deathbat." We felt this was the best way to tell the story and give you all an idea about the type of game we are creating.
Check out the trailer for the “Hail to the King” animated series here:

http://youtu.be/ZeUhpV5kmBw

This brings us to the game. Two years ago while touring in South East Asia I looked around the bus taking us from the airport to the hotel and noticed everyone was on their phones and iPads playing different types of games. We had a discussion and decided that it would be fun to create one of our own. The problem was that we didn't feel passionate about doing a full on typical music game. We wanted to do something different. Something inspired by some of our favorite games. So we came up with the idea of turning some of our songs and art work into a living, breathing, evil world.

We wanted to bring the story of the Deathbat to life and allow you to control its destiny. While the game stands on its own in terms of the story and game play, we still wanted to add in some extras for our fans. In the game you can unlock 16 pieces of never seen before artwork from all of our albums. There will also be 7 new Cam Rackam paintings available in the game. We also recorded 7 new songs. Now these aren't metal songs, they are theme songs for each level and are done in an old school video game fashion with a new school twist. There will also be reimagined versions of older songs. Basically, we have not only packed the game with exciting gameplay, but also a lot of things for fans that might now be interested in a video game. The trailer for the game will be released with the Machinima "Hail to the King" series on December 15th as well. Expect a release date in early 2014 as we are in the BETA process now. Remember, the game and series go hand in hand. The animated series tells the story "before" the game takes place. When the series ends, the game picks up.

We hope these things keep you entertained while your hanging out at home for the Holiday Season. Most importantly we hope you all enjoy the time with your families and we will see you on the road as soon as we can make it to you.

M Shadows

On March 20, 2014 Loudwire.com released an interview with Vinnie Paul of Hell Yeah in which he made mention of Avenged Sevenfold and the upcoming US and Canada 'Shepherd of Fire' Tour.
This is what he had to say:

"They’re probably the biggest metal band going today. They have an incredible following, we’ve been friends for a long time. I sent Matt [singer M. Shadows] three of the tracks before we got the tour and I’m pretty positive that’s what nailed the tour for us. He loved them. He hit me up right away and said he was going to take us out with them, which was very awesome to be able to go and play 15, 16, 17 thousand seat arenas full of people that dig f—in’ heavy metal. It’ll be awesome. It’s hard to do this day in age. To be on the bill with them is really great."

Loudwire.com Spoke with M. Shadows about the upcoming DVD and a Special 10th Anniversary 'Waking the Fallen' Edition

March 27, 2014

Avenged Sevenfold are still going strong on their ‘Hail to the King’ album and will be for quite some time, but fans of the band will be happy to know that the group intends to revisit pieces of their past for a pair of upcoming projects. Loudwire recently spoke with frontman M. Shadows who revealed plans for two projects the band hopes to complete in the coming months.

The first is the overdue 10th anniversary package for their 2003 effort, ‘Waking the Fallen.’ Shadows says, “We’re going to put something together for the 10 year anniversary of ‘Waking the Fallen,’ which is about 11 or 12 years now. We’ve been trying to think of something we could put together and we found some old demos that we did with Teppei [Teranishi] from Thrice before we even did that record.”

And that’s not all they found. Shadows adds, “We also found some old footage with [late drummer] Jimmy [Sullivan] playing some old shows at The Henry Fonda Theater in L.A., and the Ventura Theater. We’ll put together a cool DVD and some demo tracks and re-release ‘Waking the Fallen’ for newer fans of the band that haven’t gotten that or don’t know about the history of the band.”

Avenged are also plotting a new DVD. Shadows tells us, “It is going to encompass the whole world that we’ve been filming for the last 5 years being in all these different countries with our camera guy. That’ll be a fun thing I think we’re going to film some big shows — I think we’re filming Mexico City coming up and we have some other shows we’re going to film and kind of intertwine the live performance with this huge DVD we want to do. That will probably come out before Christmas.”

But before either of those projects arrive, Shadows reveals that the next thing that will arrive is the ‘Hail to the King: Deathbat’ video game. “It’s two years in the making and its really close,” says Shadows. “We’re really excited about that coming out.”

An Important Message From Avenged Sevenfold
From A7X Team | 04/30/2014
To all of our loyal fans, friends, followers and supporters.

Recently we heard about the tragic suicide of a 16 year old from the UK who was listening to music and watching videos of, among others, Avenged Sevenfold and an older project of some band members, Pinkly Smooth, in the hours prior to his death. We want you all to know that we are devastated and heartbroken for his family, friends and community. Their pain must be unimaginable and our condolences go out to them. Experts in the field of suicide have assured us that there are always many things that go into a tragedy like this, and while music can play a powerful role in someone’s life, it does not cause something like this to happen, especially not alone. Research shows that 90% of those who take their life have a brain illness, or a mental illness, going on at the time of their death. This is something most people don’t want to talk about and that keeps them from getting the good help and treatments that are out there.

The news of this young man’s death has shaken all of us in the band. Fan or not, no one should have to feel such hopelessness. It has also made us more committed than ever to do something about it so that it doesn’t happen again. If you’ve been among our faithful followers, you know that we are part of a huge event coming up on May 10th - the Rise Above Fest. We couldn’t be more honored and happy to be part of this event in support of Seether's efforts to help raise awareness about the realities of suicide. They have partnered with a great non-profit organization that is dedicated to suicide prevention - SAVE – Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, is one of the leading organizations of its kind in the world. We have reached out to SAVE and will do our part to join their fight against the stigma of suicide and mental illnesses. We want to make a difference and you can too.

If you are in the Bangor, Maine part of the country on May 10th, come to the festival (www.riseabovefest.com). If you can’t be there, check out the online auction where you can find some autographed items that we have provided to help raise money for SAVE – your donation will go directly to helping prevent another tragedy leaving so many to question “why”.

If you want to learn more about suicide prevention, visit www.save.org.
On behalf of all of us in the band, our management, crew, and our families please know that you too can get through it. Don’t ever give up! Together, let’s make sure no one else dies this way.
- Avenged Sevenfold

'This Means War' Video Released
July 4, 2014

'Honestly when we were shooting the video we were pretty excited about it. After a few attempts of editing it the video just looked bad, dragged on and just didn't do anything for us. Especially since most people didn't get the vision we were going for w the Shepherd of Fire video, we just didn't want to come next with a 6 min. boring video of a bunch of people rioting. At the end of the day all that really matters is we didn't like it so we canned it. I think everyone will be happy with the new video, especially our South American / Mexico fans.'

M. Shadows explaination as to why the video was delayed almost 6 months and then changed.

Artist Direct asked a few rockers to share their opinions of Avenged Sevenfold and "Hail to the King".
This is what they said:

James Hetfield of Metallica

James Hetfield: Avenged Sevenfold is great. I dig everything they do. We had them on the first Orion Music + More, and I got up and introduced them. I've always got them somewhere on the playlist!

Ben Bruce of Asking Alexandria

Ben Bruce: Hail to the King is amazing! It's one of my favorite records of last year. I still listen to that record probably every day. They stay true to what they are. They've been finding their feet over the last couple of years. We're good friends with those guys, and I know they're huge fans of Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, and Metallica—same as we are. I think they managed to create a record that encompasses all of those things but doesn't directly rip them off. It's a modern interpretation of a Guns N' Roses album or a Metallica album, which is really cool.

Tech N9ne

Tech N9ne: Oh my God, Hail to the King is wonderful! They came to Kansas City, and I was such a fan that I went to that show. I had the day off. I got backstage, and they said, "Man, you want to stand on stage behind?" I was like, "No, I'm going out into the fucking crowd at the sound booth so I can feel that shit!" They dedicated "A Little Piece of Heaven", one of my favorite songs by them, to me. The crowd went crazy. It was fucking beautiful. I first heard them on the City of Evil album when it came out. It was that one. From them on, I've been with them. I was going to get M. Shadows on a track, but MGK did it on his last album. We have to do something. MGK and I are homeboys, but I can't do the same thing! Shadows has some pipes, boy!

Jeff Kendrick of DevilDriver & Co-Founder of AllAxess.com

Jeff Kendrick: Hail To The King is one of my favorite releases of the past few years. Avenged Sevenfold really know how to pay tribute to classic metal, while at the same time being able to add their own particular flavor. It's a well-crafted album with sickening shredding by Synyster Gates. What a player! That guy definitely inspires me.

MGK

MGK: Those are my boys. Hail to the King is another great fucking record, and they continue to step it up. I'll say it again. M. Shadows has one of the best voices ever. I love it and was blown away as a fan.

Chris Howorth of In This Moment

Chris Howorth: I like the new Avenged Sevenfold album, Hail to the King. It sounds really great. The production is phenomenal. It's such a great album. I've definitely been listening to that.

Reggie "Fieldy" Arvizu of Korn & Stillwell

"Fieldy": They're a killer band and we've become good friends. We're practically neighbors. I like the new record too. It's got that very classic metal sound. It's dope.

Article by Rick Florino and posted on July 23, 2014

Less than a year after the release of  'Hail to the King', on July 25, 2014 an article was released by Billboard.com in which Zacky Vengeace shared that after the August 15 - 16, 2014 Japan tour dates for Summer Sonic the band would be heading home for a  break and then to begin writing their next album.

"I think once we get home, the ideas are going to start brewing," Vengeance says. "I know Syn's [lead guitarist Synyster Gates] been writing a ton purely for fun, trying different styles, recording backstage, keeping himself busy. I've been thinking of all sorts of ideas, listening to tons of different music to get inspiration — as have all of us." Says Vengeance on what they have been doing  to get the writing process moving.

Quotes from the 'Hail to the King' Era
"We're fortunate that our fans worldwide have really embraced our evolution." Synyster Gates Metal Hammer, UK December 2013 Issue
"I recall us selling out LA's 5000-capacity Gibson Amphitheatre and flying straight to Germany and playing a 300-capacity room where we'd sold only 120 tickets. That was when 'City of Evil' was really taking off in the US, but it seemed like Europe was less interested. And now our ticket sales are just crushing what we're doing in the States. That's a pretty amazing feeling. It feels like we're truly building a world wide cult. And that this is just the beginning of something special. M. Shadows Metal Hammer, UK December 2013 issue.
'I don't feel that mainstream America really cares about rock music right now." M. Shadows Metal Hammer, UK December 2013 issue

“We wanted it to be special and I think one cool thing about this band is that Johnny and Synyster Gates don’t own computers so they don’t even see the stuff going on around them. Which is kind of cool because then they just write music and put it out and it is truly from the heart - it’s not got anything to do with all the madness going around and every single person’s opinion on what Avenged Sevenfold is doing.
“So it’s pretty pure and cool in that way as it’s out of the norm which I like as then you can just make music that’s pure and not even worry about it.” M. Shadows Irish Mirror
"We're not writing a record for money or to go on tour again," he said. "We're writing a record for our legacy. Like, we want to put out only good records, and we want to take our time with them and make sure it's the best thing that represents us at this time. And so, a lot of times we sit there and go, like, we don't want any filler, we don't want this, we need to get it tighter, tighter, tighter, better, better, better." M. Shadows Pulse of the Radio August 2013
"We wouldn't have been happy making another [2010 album] 'Nightmare', we wouldn't have been happy making a [2003 second CD] 'Waking The Fallen', so if you're not happy doing it, what's the point of releasing it?"
Shadows adds, "To me that's the definition of a sell-out, is people that don't write the music that they truly want to write." M. Shadows Pulse of the Radio, August 2013
“It’s kind of like, ‘what would Jimmy do?’ He’s always with us, and I remember we were writing on his birthday, and we couldn’t figure out a chorus for a whole week, but we did this different version, because Jimmy was always like ‘oh yeah, just try this differently’ and it came out right away. So I’m not too much of a religious or spiritual guy, but it was a cool coincidence. That he could give us a gift on his birthday.”
Synyster Gates -  Interview with The music.com August 2013
“We wrote and recorded for this album longer than for any album we’ve ever done before and it’s funny how when you take the songs and really strip them down, it’s actually a harder process. When you listen to a Rolling Stones song, it sounds like there are just a couple of guys in a room jamming and they have these songs that sound fun and feel seamless and really can conquer an audience but really those guys were in the studio for years of their life. Truly, it’s the hardest thing to make a song feel effortless.” Zacky Vengeance - Thrash Hits August 20, 2013
"First off, we don't write a record until it comes to us. We don't sit there and search for it, because it's something you can't search for. You have to just feel it and say, you know what? That last record doesn't really represent us anymore. It's time to do what we are feeling at this moment. That's why it takes us three and a half years to put out an record." - M. Shadows - Guitar Center July 2013
"On this record we want a very bare-bones, riff oriented approach-more groove oriented." - M. Shadows - Guitar Center July 2013
"Let's keep this what it is--just a bare-bones, bad-ass rock metal record. So that's what we've done." -  M. Shadows - Guitar Center July 2013
"We just can't write the same record and be happy with ourselves." M. Shadows - Guitar Center July 2013
Avenged Sevenfold indisputably own modern hard rock and heavy metal right now. Very few bands in this day and age can debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and sell out arenas all over the world. They're in the position to really elevate the genre once more with their forthcoming sixth full-length studio album. Heavy metal needs to come back as the number one genre and, if anybody can once again carry it to that status, it's Avenged Sevenfold.
Quoted from the article: Albums We Hope Change the Game in 2013 – Avenged Sevenfold - Artistdirect.com - January 14, 2013.
"I told Gates, I said when we're done with this album, I want to be completely drained of all of my creativity and feel I have nothing left."
M. Shadows - May 9, 2013 - A7X Radio
